Arnold Sports Festival Kettlebell Booth

Arnold_classic_08_kettlebells I had a great time at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus Ohio on Saturday, March 1, 2008. As one of the first Kettlebell trainers in Miami Florida and training with Kettlebells for 4 years I was trilled to find the American Kettlebell booth at the Arnold Classic Trade Show. After seeing a few fit people struggling with a 24 kg (52.8 lb) kettlebell I had to pump a few snatches up with it. I surely need to lift some KB's after all the weight I was gaining eating from the best restaurants in Columbus.

It was fun and great to meet some of the American Kettlebell instructors. Their booth was always full of people discovering the benefits of Kettlebells.

Mike Mahler’s Miami Kettlebell Workshop a Great Success

M_mahler_1205_2 This past weekend we hosted a Kettlebell Workshop at my martial arts/fitness studio by Senior RKC Instructor Mike Mahler. This was his last workshop of the year and we all left the workshop with better technique and a higher level of understanding of Kettlebells. I would like to thank Mike for an awesome workshop. It was a pleasure to have this polite and humble instructor with great knowledge and charisma doing a workshop at our facility. This is truly a hard combination to find in one individual.

Mike is an incredible teacher with his own unique way of simplifying the moves. He breaks down each and every move piece by piece putting them together as if you were building blocks. This in turn simplifies the moves and when he finally has you execute the lift it comes together like magic with more precision and perfection. I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 30 years, starting as a competitive bodybuilder and in all these years I have not seen such an amazing yet simple teaching techniques. As a martial arts instructor I can say that Mike has an incredible progressive teaching method that I’ve only seen in elite martial arts masters. When I shared this with Mike he told me that he saw kettlebells training like martial arts training.

If you can not get to one of his workshops do get his DVD’s. I just got and strongly recommend “Kettlebell Solution for Size and Strength.” Mike Mahler is a true Kettlebell Master. He is destined to become a Fitness Superstar in the very near future.

Kettlebell History

Kettlebells have a rich international history. Kettlebell training as we know it today stems from Russia. KB's have been utilized for athletic and warrior training throughout the world. There is speculation that kettlebells were used by Greek athletes and gladiators thousands of years ago. There is now evidence that legendary fighting monks of the famed Shaolin Temple used granite padlocks as a training tool to enhance their kung fu fighting skills. Padlocks are rectangular looking kettlebells also known as Chinese Kettlebells.

Kettlebells were the training tool of choice for the early 1900's strongmen. The early bodybuilding and muscle building manuals and weight sets all had kettlebells. In the mid nineteen hundreds handles to transform dumbbells to kettlebells came with all weight lifting sets. That's how Bruce Lee began using them. The handles came with the barbell set that he ordered. As per the book “Bruce Lee, The Art of Expressing the Human Body” Lee trained his back muscles with the KB attachments.

In the early 1900's musclemen, bodybuilders and strong men of Europe, Canada and America like Arthur Saxon, Sig Klein, Louis Cyr and Eugen Sandow, to name a few all trained with kettlebells just like the Russian strongmen and athletes. Yet, while KB's disappeared in the West they began to flourish in the former Soviet Union. Everyone from common people, to the military, to Olympic athletes trained with kettlebells. In 1948 the first kettlebell competition took place in Russia. Later it became Russia's National sport. For more information on Russian Kettlebell history read “The Russian Kettlebell Challenge, Xtreme Fitness for Hard Living Comrades” by Pavel Tsatsouline.

Today top American athletes, police departments, the military and martial artist are training with KB's to stay on top of their food chain. We predict that the gym of the future will not be cramped with body part specific machines, thread mills, stationary bikes or even aerobic classes. We believe that the futuristic gyms will be functional and look more like the gyms of the early twentieth century with kettlebells, Indian Clubs, medicine balls, ropes to climb and room to move and train. Anta's Fitness and Self Defense is the future of fitness, what's old is new again.
